When we launched our first plugin, <\/span>Optin Feature Box<\/a><\/span>, never did we plan on building a WordPress company. <\/span><\/p>\n

Like most plugin developers, our aim was simply to have a great-working WordPress plugin that helps people, and could make us money by doing so.<\/span><\/p>\n

But<\/span>\u00a0the deeper we got into WordPress, the more we fell in love with it. With it, and the abundant entrepreneurial opportunities it offered.<\/span><\/p>\n

Within two years of starting, we grew from just two people discovering things about building WordPress plugins, to an eight-person WordPress startup. From creating one plugin, to four fully-supported, premium plugins under our belt.<\/span><\/p>\n

In short, the <\/span>WordPress industry helped us build the startup that we always aspired for. <\/span><\/p>\n

And the journey has just begun.<\/span><\/p>\n

It hasn\u2019t, however, been a smooth one. We failed at several points.<\/span><\/p>\n

From blogger outreach to customer support, we\u2019ve made many mistakes. It\u2019s been lessons learnt after lessons learnt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, we want to give<\/span>\u00a0back to the WordPress community. In whatever little way we can – while we continue with our journey.<\/span><\/p>\n

And this is how we plan to do it\u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n

Since the quickest way to learn to do things, is to learn from the people who have done it all before you, we want to make you see what makes them tick. <\/span><\/p>\n

And how they\u2019ve gone about creating a great WordPress business. <\/span><\/p>\n

So we\u2019re going to interview some of the most successful WordPress entrepreneurs today, for them to share their entrepreneurial stories with you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Plus, we are also going to share our day-to-day experiences with building and growing a WordPress startup.<\/span><\/p>\n

All this, in an exultant attempt to celebrate <\/span>WordPress Entrepreneurship<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s get back to it in a while.<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>wo issues with the WordPress entrepreneurial ecosystem<\/span><\/h3>\n

1. In the past 2+ years, from personal experience, <\/span>we\u2019ve realized this –<\/span><\/span>Most WordPress plugin developers consider themselves as developers. Not as\u00a0entrepreneurs.<\/span>\u00a0T<\/span>heir plugins\/themes as \u2018projects\u2019, and not as a startup. <\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, <\/span>they neither realize their full entrepreneurial potential nor build a real business.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>So<\/span>\u00a0we decided to change that, for ourselves, and then try and play our part in helping others as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. WordPress requires certain procedures and guidelines for product creation. However, such constraints are not present in any other SaaS product development nor in Internet startups.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some people may even find it to be a limited market. Especially those who intend to pursue businesses, beyond WordPress. However, this is an issue that we can do very little about. So, we stick to aiding issue #1.<\/span><\/p>\n

We believe that these<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>actually makes building WordPress startups more challenging.<\/span>\u00a0And that they affect \u00a0the <\/span>overall growth of the WordPress economy to an extent<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"rsz_rocket\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Let me tell you why –<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. A simple shift in mindset among developers is all it takes.<\/span>\u00a0A developer\u2019s products are not just trinkets that people buy, as if from a push-cart vendor. Their plugins are scalable, much like a startup. Peter Suhm, co-founder of <\/span>WPPusher<\/a><\/span>, presented an <\/span>interesting write-up on WPTavern<\/a><\/span>, defining what a startup is, and how plugins can also be startups.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. Plugin developers who treat their plugins like startups, actually build one around them. <\/span>Be it <\/span>PippinsPlugins<\/a><\/span>, or <\/span>WooThemes<\/a><\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0I think one reason how they managed to grow big, is how they treated their plugins as a business, and not as projects. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      They have their own development team, support team, marketing channels which contribute to them having a startup culture.<\/span><\/p>\n

      That seriousness towards building a real business, solving real problems, growing teams, and earning revenues – is what WordPress needs to have a more thriving community.<\/span><\/p>\n

      There are thousands of contributors to <\/span>WordPress. T<\/span>hat\u2019s powerful stuff – however, most of them are unknown, perhaps because many do not intend to make a brand for themselves, or do not know how to make one (again, the mindset plays a role here).<\/span><\/p>\n

      Problems that plugin developers face<\/span><\/h3>\n

      \"rsz_help\"<\/a><\/p>\n

      1. Solving only smaller problems: <\/span>Many <\/span>developers solve only problems that they face, never expanding to solve the problems of a larger audience. In fact, that\u2019s how we went about it initially.<\/span><\/p>\n

      However, that results in more fundamental issues going unnoticed. It even affects innovation in the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

      I doubt if WooThemes would have been what it is today with WooCommerce, if not for their astute business moves. <\/span><\/p>\n

      2. Poor Maintenance of their Plugins \/ Themes: <\/span>There is a unique kind of motivation and energy that startups beget. It enables them to change the world, as many have already done. <\/span><\/p>\n

      If plugin developers contributing to WordPress consider their products as startups, their efforts to maintain the tools will be that much more regular. Not that they aren\u2019t now, but things can be drastically better.<\/span><\/p>\n

      A few other things that can also improve are – <\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Code quality<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Frequency of updates<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. Time spent on creating WordPress products<\/span><\/li>\n
      4. Customer support<\/span><\/li>\n
      5. Engagement in the WordPress forum<\/span><\/li>\n
      6. Innovation as such<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        To reason this, some of the most updated plugins on the repository are the ones with freemium model. Free, limited versions are made available only get upgrades to paid versions. I believe, that\u2019s something people who think that their plugins are a startup, would do more consistently. <\/span><\/p>\n

        So, in our WordPress Entrepreneurship Blog, we intend to show:<\/span><\/p>\n

        • How entrepreneurs can go on to build a successful startup <\/span>in the WordPress scenes.<\/span><\/li>\n
        • The kind of product-building, management and promotional strategies they used <\/span>to build their startup, so that others could also follow them.<\/span><\/li>\n
        • How others can replicate their success <\/span>and build successful startups in the WordPress industry.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          We\u2019re just like so many others. We started out with one plugin, and turned it into a startup. We\u2019d like to think we understand what our peers would want to learn about.<\/span><\/p>\n
